Principles of Advocacy?
Independent - An advocate is independent and is not influenced by providers or commissioner of health or social care. Advocates have no conflict of interest
Empowering - Advocates support their advocacy partner to be heard. Advocates listen and support their advocacy partners to speak for themselves. The aim of advocacy should be to enable people to grow towards advocating for themselves.
Inclusive - Advocacy organisations recognise the diversity of individuals and ensure no one is prevented from accessing advocacy.
Impartial - Advocates are non-judgemental and this means that they listen to and hear their advocacy partners to report as their truth and therefore valid.
Confidential - Advocacy organisations will have a written policy on confidentiality, stating that information known about a person using the organisation, and any circumstances under which confidentiality might be breached.
Free - Advocacy organisations will provide and/or coordinate advocacy for their partners free of charge.
